To deepen their understanding of the maritime course and gather an experience by having a closer look at a cadets’ journey aboard, the Grade 12 learners of Hua Siong College of Iloilo (HSCI) participated in a ship tour organized by the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP) at the Port of San Pedro, Iloilo City last October 23, 2023.

The learners first gathered inside the conference room wherein rules and safety measures were introduced. They were divided into groups and were assigned two cadets during the tour.
Each group embarked on different areas of the ship. The cadets presented their bridge simulation room where they practiced their skills and abilities for various controls and operations inside the ship, especially navigation.
The experiences of each cadet propelled the learners to acknowledge the importance of possessing the necessary skills to maneuver the ship efficiently.
Antolino Vinci Rey Catequista, a Grade 12 learner said, “The ship tour offered a great experience for me as a learner since I got to learn more about ships and the ways of how they wander into the oceans. Also, I learned that the procedures and techniques of navigation look simple yet complex.”
“The marine’s experiences helped me realize the significance of their obligations. They should always be prepared for mishaps and sudden adjustments to fulfill their roles. Entering this profession indeed requires willingness since the ship’s functions depend on its people. Originally, marine was not in any of my career options; however, this tour made me reconsider my choices,” he added.
The machinery of the engines below the deck was also explored as they served as an essential part of propelling the ship. Various tools and types of machines were introduced by the engine cadets and engineers, showcasing the intricacy of every component and how they play a vital role in making the ship function.
Another Grade 12 learner, Ryuske Sendo Fabros, also shared, “As someone who always considered maritime as a career option, this ship tour offered me a fun experience since I got to know the different functions of the technology inside the ship. Additionally, I have always thought of them as brave men because of how they adapt to the hard cold sea.”
The tour concluded when the cadets and the chief officer offered their gratitude to the learners and teachers who participated in the ship tour. This experience welcomed maritime enthusiasts aboard, expanding the horizons of the learners and opening an avenue for the maritime industry to be one of their career options as they will soon step outside the realm of the institution.

A total of seventy student officials currently in Grade 10 coming from different public and private schools were chosen after two stages of the screening process.
Last October 16, 2023, the representatives, headed by Mayor Jerry P. Trenas, together with other officials, attended the city’s regular Monday flag raising ceremony at Plaza Libertad in front of the City Hall and were introduced to city officials before reporting to their respective offices.
Moreover, the student officials were made to perform their specific duties and responsibilities, together with their counterparts, and began their hands-on training on city governance until October 20, 2023.
The representing first city councilor, Therese Aby Gale Sullano shared, “The experience was surreal. This memory is something that I wish to never forget, and never will,” when asked about her experience during her term.
Boys’ and Girls’ Week Celebration has been a tradition of the Rotary Club of Iloilo City and a legacy since 1975. This annual activity introduces the true essence of being a public servant and a government official while empowering young generation leaders.
Last September 13-15, 2023, the Grade 12 learners of Hua Siong College of Iloilo Main and Ledesco Campuses presented their research concepts for the current school year which were held in separate venues.

The concepts were divided according to strands: Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM) and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
The research topics of ABM learners revolved around business and finance which included banking, customer satisfaction, and similar fields. The concepts of STEM learners were based on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics where it featured some experimental studies.
The panelists consisted of professionals in the field of education namely Dr. Branche A. Sumido, Dr. Reah Ann Torres, Dr. Jose B. Barcelona, Dr. Michael G. Garlan, and Mr. Jayson I. Gula.
Mr. Jayson Gula, head of the Senior High School Department Main Campus said, “The learners’ presentations were impressive, demonstrating a genuine commitment to innovation and problem-solving through research. It’s inspiring to see their dedication to making a positive impact in society. I’m very excited for their journey and the learnings they will gain from developing a research problem up to binding and publishing it.” All approved concepts will undergo the second and final stages of defense.
Undergoing research endeavors will develop learners’ analytical and critical thinking skills, and gain numerous benefits in creating innovative ideas in various disciplines.
Mr. Jose Arollado, an alumnus of Hua Siong College of Iloilo made a significant contribution to the Senior High School department by donating interactive televisions. The turn-over ceremony held last September 1, 2023 was attended by the teachers and learners with hopes of enhancing their learning experiences through this state-of-the-art equipment.

Mr. Arollado’s gesture aimed at fostering motivation and engagement in class discussions and expressed a single request—that these devices would not go unused.
Boasting features like cameras, applications, touch screens, and options for connecting personal computers, these interactive televisions can extensively improve the learning experiences of Senior High School learners.
Grade 12 STEM learner, Halle June Ho, attested to the impact stating, “With the installation of interactive TVs, the class discussions became more interesting and intriguing.”
To ensure optimal utilization, teachers underwent comprehensive training on harnessing the full potential of these interactive tools.
Mrs. Thesa Conlu, a Social Studies teacher of the Senior High School department affirmed, “The interactive TV helps us to project a clearer view of our lessons as well as helps us discuss lessons well.”
The institution extends its heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Jose Arollado for the remarkable donation, marking a pivotal moment in the journey of educational advancement.
As the Senior High School embarks on this road, the donated interactive TVs are poised to play a crucial role in shaping a brighter future for Hua Siong learners, equipping them with essential skills for success.
In an exchange of best practices, Hua Siong College of Iloilo (HSCI) hosted the 11th National Administrators and Mentors’ Congress for school administrators from private schools across the Philippines with the theme, “Private School Administrators Moving Forward: Towards Greater Horizons,” held last October 13, 2023 at HSCI Ledesco Campus.

Stepping beyond their respective institutions all over the country, these leaders delved into Hua Siong’s educational approaches, experiencing first-hand the facilities, equipment, and learning environment that fostered excellence among learners over the years.
Through open discussions and dialogues during the opening program, educators from diverse backgrounds and designations identified common challenges and celebrated successes of their respective institutions.
Guided tours showcased modern classrooms equipped with cutting-edge technology, while interactive sessions introduced innovative programs and teaching methodologies. Junior High School and Senior High School Student Council members served as ushers for the school tour.
The congress transcended mere observation, however, as administrators interacted with Hua Siong’s faculty and
staff, forging connections and exchanging valuable insights that promise to inspire their own teaching methods and schools were also made possible.
As the day drew to a close, the guests gathered once more, this time for a closing ceremony. HSCI’s academic director, Dr. Jose Barcelona, expressed his gratitude for the visitors’ interest in Hua Siong and their willingness to explore the programs the school had to offer.
Equipped with a fresh perspective and a renewed commitment to educational excellence, the school administrators will translate their new-found knowledge into dynamic learning experiences for their own learners.
With Mr. Ian Eric S. Pama elected to a second term as president, the school formally welcomed the newly-elected officers of the Hua Siong College of Iloilo (HSCI) Board Trustees (BOT) for School Year 2023-2025 during the induction ceremony held last September 1, 2023 at the Ty Eng Liong Gymnasium, HSCI Ledesco Campus.

Pama was first elected as president of the BOT for School Year 2021-2023. In his speech, he shared that he was ready to step down after his first term of office, yet he was nominated and selected by his fellow directors.
During his two years as president, HSCI has continued its high level of record-breaking successes in academics and sports despite starting his leadership in the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic where the school had to shift to alternative modes of education.
“My heart is full of determination as I accept the challenge again of being the president of the school. I believe that with our collective commitment and effort success can be easily achieved,” said Pama in his acceptance speech.
As re-elected president, he has numerous plans for improving and developing the institution such as renovation of facilities like offices, clinics, laboratories, and libraries.
“My vision for our school is one that celebrates diversity, cultivates creativity, and embraces innovation and to achieve this
vision, we must focus on enhancing professional development opportunities for our teachers, foster a safe and inclusive learning environment for our learners, and establish strong partnerships with parents and the community,” he added.

Every two years, the members of the board elect a new set of officers for the BOT, an organization responsible for ensuring that the school’s mission and vision are met and in proposing policies that bring about the best interest and success of the whole academic community.
